Air Emission Inventory real-time GIS

In 2013, we implemented a brand new Air Emission Inventory System for the South African Department of Environmental Affairs.  The system standardized the reporting of air emissions from various sources (vehicle, plants, residential, or landfills) across the nation.  Reporting is done on a district or municipality level and required over 200 stakeholders to buy in.

As part of project, we worked on a feature to provide real-time as well as historical data and pinpoints the areas of highest emission.  Users are able to drill down into specific air pollution source to view its total carbon emission as well as its greenhouse gas effect.  A couple of key highlights/considerations of this module:

  1. Weighed out three different mapping solutions; Google, Bing, and ArcGIS.  At the end, we decided to go with Bing because it provided the best mapping accuracy based off the budget we had.
  2. Interpolated the map's border lines to a tolerable degree in order to provide faster loading time and overall usability.  This was especially important for users that did not have access to high speed internet.
